About Gumnut Valley Alpacas

Welcome to Gumnut Valley Alpacas!

Our journey started in September 2019 when we moved from the hustle and bustle of Sydney to a picturesque 20-acre property in Butterwick and bought our first 4 alpacas. We instantly fell in love with these inquisitive and magical creatures and soon after Gumnut Valley Alpacas was born. We are now home to 40-60 alpacas at any one time.

We predominantly breed fawn and brown coloured Huacaya alpacas and our breeding program aims to improve genetics with each generation. We look to increase density, crimp and fineness, however temperament is equally important. We have enjoyed some success at NSW halter and fleece shows. Our alpacas are friendly, halter trained and will eat out of your hand.

We have two distinct birthing seasons and excitedly look forward to new arrivals every spring and autumn. Sadly, this also means that we have to sell some of our alpacas to make room for new arrivals and a select few alpacas will be offered for sale to the best of homes.

The health, safety and wellbeing of our animals is paramount to everything we do. We have an extensive husbandry schedule and provide all care to keep our animals happy and healthy. We offer introduction and husbandry workshops to those considering getting alpacas, as well as providing hands on experience to new owners.

We quickly realised that our new lifestyle had huge benefits. Alpacas are effective therapy animals and spending time with them can have a calming effect, relieve stress and anxiety and improve overall mood.

In 2022 we started breeding Nigerian Dwarf goats and Silkie chickens and the 2024 arrival of three gelded miniature Mediterranean donkeys completed our menagerie.

We want to share our love for animals, and are especially passionate about connecting people with our amazing animals.  We hand feed our animals twice daily and run several farm activities, such as animal feeding and picnics with alpacas.

On a personal level, Steve is a 35-year Air Force veteran, working as a reservist Flight Sergeant at Williamtown RAAF base. Marian is an NDIS Support Coordinator, working with people with chronic and severe psychosocial disabilities. Our working days are Tuesdays to Thursdays, allowing 4 days per week to be dedicated to our farm and animals.
