Volunteering

Gumnut Valley Alpacas is a working alpaca farm with 30-40 alpacas, Nigerian dwarf goats, Silkie chickens and a few Pekin ducks.

From time to time we are able to offer volunteer opportunities to people willing and able to dedicate some time to assist us with caring for our beautiful animals and maintenance of their environments.

Perhaps you have always wanted to know more about alpacas, maybe you are looking for a better life/work balance or you may be retired and wanting to find a meaningful activity to do. Working with animals reduces stress and is very therapeutic.

Activities include:

  • Removal of old hay and feed out new hay
  • Cleaning and refilling water troughs
  • Clearing paddocks of sticks and weeds
  • Poo vacuuming and bagging up manure
  • Mixing up and refilling grain bins
  • Halter train and walk alpacas
  • Assist with husbandry tasks
  • Assist with matings
  • Cleaning of chicken coops, refilling feed and water

What will you get out of it?

You will learn new skills, meet new people, interact with our animals and be part of a working farm. You may be able to bottle feed baby goats and if you’re really lucky you may even witness the birth of a cria (baby alpaca).
